Pyrophyllite is a naturally occurring hydrated aluminum silicate mineral with the chemical formula Al₂Si₄O₁₀(OH)₂. This mineral possesses a lamellar or layered structure, similar to talc, which gives it a soft, greasy feel. Due to its unique properties, such as high thermal stability, low thermal and electrical conductivity, and chemical inertness, pyrophyllite finds extensive use across various industrial sectors. It serves as a refractory raw material in high-temperature furnaces, as an economical filler in plastics and rubber, and as a functional additive in products like paints, cosmetics, and soaps and detergents.
